Las Iguanas, Stratford
This place has a special place in my heart because it’s comfort food and it’s not a burger! We’ve been here on numerous occasions but since I’d been a while ago, they’d changed their menu to an even better selection of halal dishes. We’ve had the burritos and the standard Mexican dishes before but we felt like trying the more Brazilian dishes.
The dishes here were full of so many different flavours and to be honest we were nicely surprised at the variety on the menu. It seems that there many different influences from Thai and African cuisine.
It was happy hour i.e. buy one drink, get another free and they have a selection of three different mocktails… raspberry and tropical cooler were our choice. (NB. Alcohol is served here so do make sure to read the drinks menu thoroughly).
We ordered some nachos to share, these were okay but did feel that the sour cream, guacamole and salsa was served a bit on the stingy side and the nachos were a little too dry. Nothing really outstanding about the starter but it wasn’t inedible. To be honest anything with a bit of cheese and salsa can be made better.
Blazing bird is a popular choice with many, well cooked chicken in barbecue sauce served with either salad or rice. The nice thing about this place is that you can choose your flavours and any extra sides etc
The sweet potato chips were quite good, not too oily and the aioli with it was full of delicate flavours that complemented well the crunchiness of the chips.
The Bahia Moheca dish resembled a light fish curry served with rice, plantain and dried coconut. We felt like this dish needed an extra something or a lacking flavour but was still delicious. The fish was not overcooked and very tender.
The star of the night has to be the Amarao de Calabaza. This dish is basically a baked butternut squash that is a bowl for this creamy coconut prawn curry. The bowl is topped off with a king prawn and cheese (the cheese was a bit weird have to admit but it’s spanish/south american!) served next to a bed of fluffy basmati rice. This dish was actually so good, haven’t enjoyed a meal as much as I did in a while. Watch out for the little chillis, wow…. I nearly choked (probably doesn’t match naga but just be careful!).
Food 4/5 The food here is actually very good and portion sizes are generous.
Service 3/5 Some of the waiters are a bit slow and you might need to wave your hands a few times to get their attention. It was busy and when they did come, they were very friendly!
Value 4/5 If you are students, you can sign up to a loyalty card which gives you 20% off. Otherwise, not badly priced at all considering it’s location in Westfield.
Venue 4/5 This restaurant is in the Westfield in Stratford. The place is big and ideal for big parties and actually quite nicely designed. Seating is comfortable and the atmosphere is very nice.
SAS 3/5 Nothing majorly special about this place but the variety on the menu does earn some points.
Non halal meat (pork) and alcohol is served here.
